A block of flats has been designed on the site of demolished gallery flats, with 200 units of different typologies, each with spacious private outside spaces. The residences face onto a central park. The necessary parking places, a collective bicycle shed, and individual storerooms in the cellar under each building complete the concept of living on the park. So far the collective spaces in the Componistenbuurt have been limited to a gallery and the park; we add a third type: the inner court. The courtyard guarantees that the area can be intimate and informal. It is the intermediate point between the housing and park, as well as between the housing and the street. There are three courtyards in the block of flats, a veranda court, a garden court and the outside space of the health centre. Several openings have been made in the deck though which marsh cypresses grow and the intimacy of the courts is reinforced. The openings are oversized in such a way that daylight can shine into the parking garage. The materials used in the courts focus on creating a warm feeling.
