Componistenbuurt

Maassluis

The Componistenbuurt (Composers’ neighborhood) was built in the 1960s. At that time, the CIAM design concepts of light, air and space were coupled with an increase in scale and industrial building methods. Since the 1970s, however, the concept of ideal living has changed drastically. People no longer want a garden city with apartments and a collective green area, but individual residences with their own gardens; blocks of flats now have a bad image. In the Componistenbuurt, the quality of life has gradually come to more closely resemble the new residences of house and garden than the old housing neighborhoods of block flats and interior courts. In our design, we eliminate the polarization between the different ideals on living, and create a residential building that combines the qualities of both extreme visions.
